Celebrating Moose Hunting in Maine
Moose hunting is a big deal here in the State of Maine – big for the hunter whose name is selected in the lottery; for the subpermittee who has the opportunity to assist the primary hunter; for the family and friends who make up the extended hunting party; for the guides and outfitters who have been scouting all year to make the hunt a success; and for the meat-cutters and taxidermists who help preserve the meals and the memories.
The Maine Sportsman’s March, 2024 issue celebrates those hunters who filled their tags during the 2023 season, thereby qualifying for red-and-gold shoulder patches as members of the Maine Moose Hunters Club.
And with their patch club applications, they submitted some great photos, so those images could be shared with our readers. Congratulations to everyone whose name is included on the list of patch club winners!
This month also brings with it the best ice fishing of the entire season – with longer days and warm sunlight. The Sportsman covers the sport in different ways and with different species – from smelt (“Catch More Smelts,” by Christi Holmes and “The Allure of Smelting” by Bob Humphrey) to cusk (Val Marquez, and Steve Carpenteri), to brown trout and brook trout (Nolan Raymond and Bill Graves.)
And photographer Jonathan Wheaton chronicles a day on the ice with a few of his best friends, capturing the spirit as only he can.
