The November 2025 Issue of The Maine Sportsman

October 29, 2025 | Newsletter

In Deer Season, We Give Our Readers What They Want!

The Maine Sportsman’s November, 2025 issue represents our best effort to match and amplify the excitement generated by the annual firearms season on whitetail deer in this state. It also serves as an opportunity to welcome Rick Labbe and Neil Pendleton, of True North Lifestyle, who each contributed a column this month – perhaps the first of many.

Rick Labbe was born in Oakland, Maine, and has spent over 50 years hunting whitetails across 17 states and five Canadian provinces. He has taken more than 50 bucks over 200 lbs. Photo: The True North Lifestyle

In Rick Labbe’s “Preparing for Deer Season in Maine,” he sets forth how to get yourself, your gear and your family ready for November’s hunting season.

Meanwhile, Neil Pendleton offers up the tale of his first of many 200-lb-plus bucks. As it happens, he tagged this one as a college student, while hunting across Maine’s state line into New Hampshire.

We look forward to future submissions from the True North Lifestyle team.

The November issue’s deer coverage continues, with newcomer Reece Reed detailing how to successfully hunt Maine’s uninhabited offshore islands.

Rounding out the whitetail-related information are columns from expert hunters including Christi Elliott (“How to Age a Buck”), Staci Warren (“Using Deer Calls During Different Rut Phases”), Joe Saltalamachia (“Why I Love the Rut”) Jim Andrews (“Mentoring a New Deer Hunter”), Jim Fahey’s decoy-deer story (“The One that Got Away”), Bill Sheldon’s “When and Where of Deer Hunting,” and Matt Breton’s “Deer Camp.”

Maine Sportsman’s readers also contribute many trophy photos, including big deer harvested during this year’s bow/crossbow season.

The November issue of The Sportsman also provides an opportunity to give some well-deserved recognition and praise to the “Crown of Maine” – Aroostook County, known ’round here is simply “The County.” Read all about it in this month’ editorial (“The Wonderful World of Aroostook County”), as well as in Bill Graves’ richly-illustrated monthly column, titled “Big Bucks and Late-Season Geese.”

All this, and the best quotes, cartoons and jokes found anywhere below Upper Frenchville or above Lower Beddington.

And don’t forget to check out the new and improved digital Maine Sportsman magazine. Click here to order a single electronic copy ($4.95) or a full year of 12 electronic issues ($24.95).
