The December Issue of The Maine Sportsman

November 25, 2025 | Newsletter

The Magic of Tracking Whitetails in the Snow

Maine deer hunters know there’s a certain magic to tracking their quarry when there’s fresh powder on the ground. Mysteries are revealed through the patterns of hoof-prints, aggressive scrapes, and mossy feeding areas raked clean of snow. After a day or two, distinct travel routes emerge. And for the lucky hunter who shoots a deer, locating that deer is immeasurably easier when there’s snow on the ground.

The Maine Sportsman’s December, 2025 issue pays homage to this culmination of the annual hunting season with tracking pieces by the experts, including

Rick Labbe admits that all year long, he thinks about tracking snow. Photo: True North Lifestyle

Rick Labbe (see “The Old Slammer,” p. 18), Jim Andrews, Matt Breton and Nate Fenderson. Follow their advice, and prepare to fill the freezer.

And if you’ve tagged a deer this season that weighed 200 pounds or more (field dressed), don’t forget to apply for a “Biggest Bucks in Maine” patch before December 31, in order to get your name – and maybe your photo – in The Maine Sportsman’s February 2026 special issue.

“Smoke-pole” enthusiasts will appreciate John LaMarca’s excellent updates found in “The Most Frequently-Asked Questions about Modern Muzzleloaders” (p. 22). He reports that barrel and breach strength have been increased to the point that some of the very newest muzzleloaders are engineered to accommodate regular (smokeless) gunpowder.

This issue of The Sportsman also covers hare-hunting hints and tactics from Bill Graves (“The County”), Tom Seymour (“Moosehead Region”), and Bill Sheldon (“Katahdin Country”).

Nolan Raymond weighs in with his intro to hard-water angling (“Early-Season Ice Fishing,” p. 31), and Steve Carpenteri salutes Maine’s snowmobile clubs and their imaginative names, including Stump Thumpers, Bog Hooters and Branch-Duckers (“Form a Club; Name a Club,” p. 33).

The Christmas holiday is nearly upon us, and three of our writers offer helpful suggestions, starting with Scott Oehrlein (“Gift Ideas for Upland Bird Hunters”), continuing with William Clunie’s Rangeley column (“Perfect Gifts for the Maine Sportsman”), and wrapping up with a light-hearted look by Al Diamon at bad and unpopular outdoors-themed presents he has given to others over the years (“The Best Christmas Gifts Aren’t Necessarily the Best”).

Maine Sportsman’s readers also contribute many trophy photos, including big deer harvested during Youth Days and the early days of the hunt.

All this, and the best quotes, cartoons and jokes found anywhere below Upper Shirley Corner and above Lower Cupsuptic Township.
