Zach LaFreniere of Howland established a new state record on September 16, 2025 when he tagged this sow black bear, which had a dressed weight of 358 pounds (estimated live weight: 429.6 pounds). Zach was hunting in Corinth, using a .35 Whalen. The record-setting sow was registered and certified at The Village Market, on the Plymouth Road in Carmel (certified scale #112191).
This record displaces the former record-holder for a sow black bear, Brendan Gardner, of East Bridgeport, MA, who tagged a 395.5-lb. (live weight) trophy on September 22, 2022 in Andover.
Congratulations, Zack, on your state record, which is now listed on the Maine Sportsman’s website, linked to the “Hunting and Fishing Records” tab.
